This gallery is a melange of my photographic styles as well as a look into my daily life. I try to capture something new every day or else to find something that fits the day. It's a great excuse to carry my camera with me more often than not, and it allows me to stop and take those pictures that need to be taken.

Good morning Houston.

A big day. It started at 6:00 am with a team sendoff for the MS 150 Bike Ride where 13,000 riders are pedaling from Houston to Austin in two days. They anticipate raising $14 million to fight Multiple Sclerosis, and this is the 24th year for the event. It has become the benchmark for fundraising rides across the country.

After we chased our team down to photograph them passing as many times as we felt we could safely do so, we still had time to catch the sunrise on the way to breakfast. This is not Downtown Houston, but it's an area known as the Energy Corridor on the city's far west side.

An aside, I haven't ridden in the back of a pickup truck in YEARS, but it's still a rush! I have a pretty special partner who will get up early just to drive me through hordes of bikers so I can get some extra shots.

Part of this week's assignment for my photography class involved shooting silhouettes. I was on a roof shooting baseball, and although I kept wishing a very big bird would fly slowly past the sun, it wasn't to be. There wasn't anything "pretty" to silhouette, so I decided the telephone pole and power doohickeys would have to do. This is straight out of the camera, no filters applied or other fix-it-ups aside from a minor crop.

I'll be out early in the morning before sunrise . . . one more chance. Perhaps I'll catch an obliging bicyclist -- or a flock of them -- taking off for the MS 150.

Pasta or Passion?

Well . . . it’s really not that difficult. If I had to choose between the love of my life or pasta, he would win. Fortunately, however, there are days when he is not around, and that’s when I get to cheat.

See . . . my sweet hubby has a condition known as celiac disease. He can’t tolerate gluten, so foods containing wheat, oats, rye, and barley are all verboten. Yeah . . . that meant no more dinner rolls, chicken fried steak, pasta, pizza or even beer. (Thank heaven for Anheuser Busch’s Redbridge!) The adjustment period was a little tricky, but we figured out how to plan around what he CAN have rather than what he CANNOT have and it was definitely worth it,

Still . . . one or two nights a week, he has activities at the church, so that’s when the kids and I get our gluten fix. Last night it was Enrica Zocci’s Pasta Alla Caprese . . . a family favorite for many many years, but one that I haven’t had in ages. Mmmmmm! It was as simple and delish as I remembered. I’ll share the recipe.

4 large tomatoes, sliced thin
1 sweet red or green pepper, sliced thin,
3 cloves garlic, minced
20 leaves fresh basil, torn (or 1Tbsp dry, crushed)
½ c of the best olive oil you can afford
1 tsp salt
a healthy dose of fresh ground black pepper.

Toss all this into a large bowl, cover with a clean cup towel, and let it sit at least two hours. Just before serving, cook pasta (rigatoni, penne, or ziti) and cube about ½ lb of mozzarella. Toss the hot pasta and cheese into the bowl and mix gently. Top with fresh grated Parmesan at the table.

It’s supposed to serve 6, but the three of us devoured it all!

Try it! You'll like it!

Yesterday afternoon was Day Two of the District JV track meet. If these amazing athletes are JV, I can't wait to see what the Varsity kids can do next week.

Winning Feat

Kevin's feet won the 3200 meter race yesterday afternoon. YEOWTCH! Way to go.

He says he's never gotten blisters before. I hope he went home and soaked his tootsies last night, and that he is wearing new soft thick socks today -- but I'm just somebody else's mom, so what do I know?

Hibiscus . . . In Your Face

It was a great weekend for working (aka playing) in the yard.

My yard work shoe. This looks like one of those accidental photos but I actually took it on purpose. Sat down, looked down, and liked what I saw through the viewfinder. SNAP!

Itsy Bitsy Visitor

 . . . eating up my Salvia.

Poor little guy isn't even 1/4 inch long so he shouldn't do much damage. It's just that he brought his mama and his daddy and his aunts and uncles and cousins and everybody else with him.

The Gold The Musical

This weekend I had the privilege of shooting stage call photos for a brand new and extremely emotional musical that is making its world debut in Houston. www.thegoldthemusical.com
Today I did the PP work on their images.

Many many thanks to Matt P. for sharing his theatrical knowledge with me! It made a world of difference for me, and I learned tons from the experience.

This is actually an image combined from two photos. As a rule I was happier with my tighter shots than with the wide shots. I'm sure it has something to do with the wide aperture and shallow DOF, huh?

Here's the link to the gallery. I'm just now uploading it (6:30 pm CST) so check back later if you'd like to see more.

An afternoon of senior pictures, and oh my goodness did we have fun. It was WAY too hard to choose one image for the day, but this is a fun shot for starters. More to come soon,

I met Big Ugly in the park today.

On my way home from an event, I stopped in the park to check out an area I was contemplating for senior pictures tomorrow afternoon. We may still go to the same park, but I will NOT send my student off the paths into the grassy areas like I had planned.

This guy was not one of my friendly garden snakes. Big and black as he was tells me he may have been a water moccasin. Anyway . . . I was in his home, so I took a few photos (from a relatively safe distance) and went along my merry way to leave him to his.

Update: Just did a little checking and yes . . . I'm convinced he was a "Western Cottonmouth" of average adult size between three and five feet. Not a nice guy to get tangled up with . . . Here's more info for those who want a science lesson. http://www.houstonherp.com/Cottonmouth.htm

Glitter & Gloss

Today I volunteered my time to run a photo booth at a community fund raiser geared toward girls and their mothers. So many young beauties came to pose that I just couldn't choose my favorite image of the day, but this is certainly one of them.

I believe everyone who came through the booth will find at least a few pictures that they will absolutely love . . . and I will start posting them as soon as possible, probably on Monday. Please be patient. You will find them in the "Events" Section of my Web Site. I will post them in small batches based upon the time of day they were taken. If you are looking for your photo and can't find it, please come back later. It may take a while to get them all up.

This could only mean one thing . . . something good's for dinner. In this case it was jambalaya.

It's not too often that all three of our sons who still live in town are in one place at dinnertime. Last night was one of those occasions. The other two, who are in Chicago and Fort Worth, had to fend for themselves.
