This gallery is a melange of my photographic styles as well as a look into my daily life. I try to capture something new every day or else to find something that fits the day. It's a great excuse to carry my camera with me more often than not, and it allows me to stop and take those pictures that need to be taken.

Dickey Box Nice Cars

Back in the old hometown last week, I just had to run out and grab a few images of this classic old car dealership. I don't know that too many people in Midland, TX think of this as a landmark, but to me it's a treasure that should be preserved. Cool structure, huh?

Back in the 1970's the dealership had a sign that said "Dickey Box Nice Cars," but someone must have decided to upgrade the venture to "Motor Company."

One of my high school friends had a stepfather who actually worked here as a salesman. We never knew when my friend would show up driving some new cute vehicle with dealer tags. She might have it for a day or two or maybe for a couple of weeks before she would give it back. Fun times -- we'd take that car to "Love's Burger Train" (but we all just called it Loves) for a French Vanilla Cherry Lemon Lime Sprite before driving by all the cute boys' houses.

Last time I looked, Loves had turned into a beauty shop. Dickey must have sold all of his cars after he changed his sign. And the Robert E. Lee High School Class of '78 did not have a 30 year reunion this year . . . sigh.

"The whole problem can be stated quite simply by asking, 'Is there a meaning to music?' My answer would be, 'Yes.' And 'Can you state in so many words what the meaning is?' My answer to that would be, 'No.' " -- Aaron Copland, US Composer

"Stamina is utterly important. And stamina is only possible if it's managed well. People think all they need to do is endure one crazy intense, job-free creative burst and their dreams will come true. They are wrong, they are stupidly wrong" -- Hugh Macleod in "How to be Creative: 3. Put the hours in."

Just got back from another poorly internet-connected trip to see my mom. Great visit. Lots of catching up to do/continue. Busy day ahead!

"Go confidently in the direction of your dreams! Live the life you've imagined. As you simplify your life, the laws of the universe will be simpler." -- Henry David Thoreau

Sounds good in theory, doesn't it? I keep telling myself this, but for some reason the simplification just doesn't happen. Everything gets more intricate and complex, frustrating, and fascinating at the same time.

The more I learn and accomplish, the more I realize that there IS for me to learn and accomplish.

Bottle Tree and a Purple Sky

This bottle tree stands in the middle of my mother's amazing vegetable garden. In the early African American Culture I believe they used blue glass bottles to ward of bad spirits. This one is just for the colorful impact. It was so much fun to photograph too.

In this particular image, the sky blew out so I just played with the selective coloring on the white sky. It looked pretty cool in red as well. Maybe I should consider a tryptich or quad composition.

Rosa's Cafe

This shot is just a bit of a romantic trip down memory lane for me. It's where Mike and I had our first lunch date. Rosa's became a favorite and a Friday night tradition for us as we blended our two families in 1997.

I was back in the old hometown this week to stay with my mother while she recovered from an emergency double-bypass.

Thank you to everyone for your many e-mails, kind comments and prayers. AND a special thank you to Karina for letting my friends at the Dailies know why I seemed to drop from existence last week.

We are very very thankful that Mom, we all call her Pepper, got to the hospital when she did and that the physicians were able to diagnose and repair her problem. She is doing absolutely fantastic and is on her way, as my sister in law says, to setting another world record for recovery time.

I'm also very thankful that I was able to go out there, but also glad to be home for now. There's a whole lot of catching up to do.

Mustangs Fight!

I get a picture similar to this nearly every week. Probably it would behoove me to find a different angle, but can hardly tear myself away from this one.

There's nothing like the last minutes before a high-school football game begins. The air starts feeling just a little cool, (at least we aren't sweating anymore). Pretty girls with shiny pompoms and legitimately short skirts jump and smile and dance. The bands in the stands blast out fight songs while cheerleaders, and flagmen lead adrenalin-driven athletes onto a perfect green field with unbelievable fanfare.

This is America's finest -- our youth-- at their finest.

I've really learned to love football in the last few years and this was a FANTASTIC weekend, at least on the collegiate level. Oh . . . did I mention that my Alma Mater is now NUMBER ONE IN THE NATION!?!!?!?!?!!!!!

HOOK 'EM HORNS! Whoo HOO!

At the Mall -- Continued

(Edit added for John) The mall has a little screen on the floor with video games projected on it. I couldn't really tell if it was interactive or if it just changed and moved randomly, but the kids were having a blast jumping around on the different characters and color blocks.

In the Food Court

A friend of mine once said that if she ever opened a restaurant, she'd name it "I Don't Care, You Decide."

I believe she'd be successful because everyone would end up there by default.

 C'mon in. The Water's Fine.

Maybe today will be a productive day. After all, I had my POD by 3:00 am.

The dog woke us up in the night and we let her out where she proceeded to chase this guy into the pool. It's proven to be a great method of armadillo catching for us in the past too.

If it hadn't been 3:00, we would have put him into a crate for relocation, but instead we let him go. When we got him out he shook off like a cat, wandered in circles a bit, bumped into the patio table (they have very poor eyesight) and finally ran off.

He'll be back to dig up my flower beds tonight, I'm sure.

For those of you who have only seen these guys dead and upside down on the side of the road here's proof that living armadillos really do exist. Surprisingly they are very good swimmers too.
