This gallery is a melange of my photographic styles as well as a look into my daily life. I try to capture something new every day or else to find something that fits the day. It's a great excuse to carry my camera with me more often than not, and it allows me to stop and take those pictures that need to be taken.

I spent a little time the other day at my son's new first apartment waiting for the cable/internet hookup man so that Ian wouldn't miss time at work. It gave me a chance to photograph some of those items that were on my someday-but-never-gotten around-to list while they were in my home every day.

We happened upon a watermelon and banana eating competition at the beach this weekend. A nice sized crowd gathered to watch, but it took some time and effort to recruit four people with enough spirit to take the challenge. The young man closest to the camera won. His prize . . . McDonald's Gift Cards.

My Hero!

We went to Galveston today, and my very buff boyfriend had to rescue me from the sea creatures.

Actually, we were at the AIA sandcastle competition and this is the backdrop that his company set up to encourage people to vote for their structure as the public favorite. I'm just a sucker for these things.

Something's Missing

Thanks to Hillary for the inspiration and my headline, so blatantly plagiarized from her POD. I could do better on the lighting, but this project is causing me to lose motivation. Besides, there's nothing to see here!

What's happening today? Absolutely nothing . . . again. Yes, every nightmare warning story about kitchen remodeling is absolutely true. With no end in sight, it's been four weeks of grilling, takeout, and paper plates, washing serving utensils and coffee cups in the bath tub, and not even having a place to set things when we take them out of our fridge which, thankfully, still works. The microwave in the family room is an added decorative touch, and I believe the only reason we even have a floor is because we put it in two years ago. Projected finish date for our project . . . April 15 -- yes, 2008. Maybe I should re-read my contract I HOPE it doesn't say 2009.

Even Addie, taking it in from her favoite perch, is bewildered. Note the bandage on her back leg. We had an unplanned canine surgery this week too . . . But that's a story for another day.

Time to Turn on the Lights

Have you ever thought about what it would be like to show someone, for the very first time, how to work a light switch? To explain how to use a microwave, or hot and cold running water, and how to flush a toilet? To introduce them to our culture after a lifetime of danger, war, death, disease and starvation?

We watched a movie this weekend that touched on these things and a whole lot more.

“God Grew Tired of Us” is a documentary (It’s also a book) following the life of several young Sudanese refugees who fled their homeland because of an atrocious war of genocide. They eventually made their way to the United States where everything about our culture was new and foreign to them. Even though there is hope for the featured men, I sat mesmerized, horrified, and deeply saddened by the plight of so many.

I’m not a politically motivated person, but I am a member of the human race. Above all, I am completely baffled as to why or how we as a nation select where to get involved in foreign affairs. Whether or not we should be so focused on Iraq may be the debate of choice these days, but I absolutely do not understand why we have no presence in Darfur, which is a region of Sudan. Especially if we want to eliminate terrorism and genocide.

“God Grew Tired of Us” is a must see. It’s not light . . . it’s not easy . . . and even though there are enough humorous moments to break the tension and make the show extremely watch-able, it’s not fun and entertaining. It's what I call a "thinker" movie. It will make you think as it sheds some very important light on what happens in a part of our world that we know so little about.

“God Grew Tired of Us” Put it on your Netflix list.

He rides around in the console of Mike's truck to keep him company during a tedious commute. Perhaps riding all morning with Ian during the move was more excitent than he bargained for . . . or is it that he's afraid my tripod is about to crush him?
    Shelly > May 24, 2008

Friends who will help you move are the best kind of friends. It doesn't hurt if they have a truck either.

Ian moved into his first apartment yesterday. I'm so proud of him, but a little sad too. That's alright . . . there's still enough stuff left behind that it really doesn't feel as if he's gone anywhere. He's not far away, but he's officially on his own. That's Melissa and Jeb, Lisa, Ian, Mike and me getting ready for a caravan ride over to his new digs.

Musing on Manicures and Mimosas -- or maybe that's a Bellini

When we first moved to Houston nearly 10 years ago, I was amazed and intrigued that nearly every woman I met had a perfect manicure. My hairdresser at the time told me that we have more nail salons per capita than any other city in the United States. I don't know if that's really true or not, but there is a nail salon in every strip center in town. I think it's a prerequisite for retail developers to secure a nail salon, a dry cleaners, and a donut/kolache shop before allowing leasing opportunities for other businesses.

I've always been a tad envious of the manicure-getting brigade, but obviously not enough to join their ranks. It's not as if I couldn't. Still, it never fails that if I do my own nails, a repair or yard project starts calling my name within the hour. With or without gloves, wear and tear happens. I've had exactly one professional manicure in my entire life. It was gorgeous . . . for about two days.

So -- I continue to get my annual pedicure about every two or three years in order to keep the old hooves in fair repair, and I feel like I'm doing a good job if I remember to use hand lotion.

Here's to the ladies at the salons! Your nails may or may not be real, but they are well-cared-for just like the philanthropic organizations you all so generously and enthusiastically support. That shows me that your hearts are most certainly quite real. Thank you for keeping Texas beautiful.

Sweet Stuff

servers used to ask
one lump or two
now it's a question of
pink, yellow, blue
i prefer the white please
or maybe lightly brown
to sweeten my own ice tea
and then to stir it 'round

Okay -- corny, I know. i like the real thing -- and Coca Cola too.

Sqiggles

My little reptilian buddy from March 12 http://www.spccreative.com/popular/1/264947975_ngG2K#264947975_ngG2K came back to see me again. This time he was alone.

We had a serious conversation where I told him he as welcome in my yard but that I would appreciate it if he didn't startle me so much every time he showed up. He responded and said that he'd play fair if I would, reminding me that he was more afraid of me than I was of him,

"Yeah," I said. "I've heard that one before."

"Well -- it's true," he told me. "By the way, would you please keep that Siamese Cat in the house? He's really scary."

We left each other with an understanding -- We both know where the other lives and we both get a kick out of making the other jump.

For a skinny guy, (no bigger around than my little finger) he sure is long. Had to be at least two feet or longer.

For a citified country girl, I sure am -- you fill in the blank.

Backlit White Roses in the Rain Highlighted with a Reflector.

This is the parting shot for the class I have been enrolled in over the last 8 weeks. I struggle with white things, so I chose to make white roses my subject. Therefore -- here you have it. An image that addresses lots of hard stuff (for me anyway): Backlit White Roses in the Rain -- Highlighted with a Reflector.
