A Foreign Visitor

Roberto (Bob for short) the Bobwhite Quail made a visit to our back yard. He seemed to enjoy hanging out with the doves who are regulars at the feeder, and they didn't appear to mind sharing. This is our first noted visit from a quail.

Shot through a dirty window, so by viewing large, you might be able to identify puppy tongue prints.

Bull Market in the Galleria

Actually this pic is from Saturday, the 19th, but if Smugmug can skip a day or two, so can I. This bull sculpture, created entirely from Red Bull cans, reminded me immediately of Alex's Bull Market shot from New York: http://www.smugmug.com/gallery/3752956_jdnMo#295448191_sGnCA

People were lining up for pictures with the bull. I've never seen so many camera phones in action in one place in my life.

Again, I used the little point n shoot and then a little bit of pp work for effects.

We rarely go the the Galleria but it was a good mind diversion, and the air condition works well. There's certainly no indication of a lagging economy there.

Good morning Houston.

A big day. It started at 6:00 am with a team sendoff for the MS 150 Bike Ride where 13,000 riders are pedaling from Houston to Austin in two days. They anticipate raising $14 million to fight Multiple Sclerosis, and this is the 24th year for the event. It has become the benchmark for fundraising rides across the country.

After we chased our team down to photograph them passing as many times as we felt we could safely do so, we still had time to catch the sunrise on the way to breakfast. This is not Downtown Houston, but it's an area known as the Energy Corridor on the city's far west side.

An aside, I haven't ridden in the back of a pickup truck in YEARS, but it's still a rush! I have a pretty special partner who will get up early just to drive me through hordes of bikers so I can get some extra shots.

It's Rodeo Time

A Sweet Ride

About this time every year, traffic in Houston comes to a standstill. It's the one time that road rage is not an issue. Urban sprawl meets the Wild West as several world reknown trail rides converge upon the city to kick off the annual Stock Show and Rodeo.

You never think about the trail rides. You just happen upon them. This morning on the way in to the office, traffic came to a crawl. I quickly realized that it was the Valley Lodge Trail Ride group on its way to the Rodeo -- and not some major traffic mishap. If I was late for my meeting, everyone would understand coming upon the riders.

Once I passed the group, I thought about stopping to watch them go by and trying to take a few photos. Good sense, however, told me that afterward I'd be behind them again and I would be very late. People would NOT understand that.

I drove on.

Later as I headed back out to the "burbs" I thought about trying to find the riders again, but alas . . . I was in that old guilt-ridden hurry that I'm always in, so I took the Interstate.

Lo and behold, at the corner turning from the freeway to our subdivision, there was the whole trail ride group taking their lunch break. They weave a rather circuitous route to minimize traffic disruption and to hit parks for overnight camping.

This time I stopped. I think I was the only person on the lot that wasn't either a part of the ride, a Sheriff's Constable, or a mom with toddlers. I'm glad I stopped anyway. Rubbed lots of fuzzy noses, and didn't even sneeze. (This is BIG!)

We were too far out to get a good skyline juxtaposition with the riders, but couldn't resist the nose and the Mercedes hood ornament.

Either one is a very sweet ride. Only in Houston! I sure do love it here. Especially on beautiful blue-sky 70 degree February days when any excuse to play outside is a good excuse.

Dancing in the park.

This dancer's fuschia dress was stunning, but we had so many brilliant colors throughout the park that they created visual clutter. This one just worked in b&w . . . don't you think?
