HOT ENOUGH . . .

We've been breaking 100 and setting heat records for the last five days. I think we've topped 95 every day since the first week of June too. Definitely smart to curtail the outdoor activities for the most part.

I tried frying an egg on the sidewalk when I was a kid, and got fussed at for making a mess and wasting the egg. Now I'm the grownup and I'm paying for the groceries.

After about 30-45 minutes the egg did start firming up a bit, but it certainly wasn't anything I would have served to company. Probably should have sprayed the concrete with Pam before I started.

No worries about the mess. Lucy was happy to handle cleanup.

Nearly Lost

This photo nearly got deleted because I didn't like it at first. But, I'm a big believer in second chances. After a little curves adjustment to make the colors pop, I'm thriled that I took both a vertical and horizontal image.

This was the basketball rack that was on the court between the JV and Varsity girls basketball games the other night. Lots of great action coming!

One last shot from our fun "playday" This is how we play. Mike drives and I take pictures. Did I tell you guys that I LOVE my husband?!?!?!?

I spent many hours spinning around on a merry-go-round that was much like this one but that was a LONG time ago. Six or seven little boys could get one of these things going REALLY fast! WHEEEEEEE!

Yeah! This is where I must have gotten chiggers or allergies, lying on the grass to take this picture. Forgot about those little buggers.

Itchy-Scratchy-Itchy-Scratchy.

If you'd like to take a look at the rest of the images from the day, they're here:

It's a beautiful weekend for settin' on the porch at the ol' country place . . . but we don't have a porch OR an ol' country place so we went searching for one. We found it.

Beautiful today! It was either going to be yardwork or a country drive. Guess what we picked. The weeds can wait.

Speedy Spencer

Please allow me to indulge myself in showing off some of my cool relatives this week. This is my nephew as he finished the Lost Pines Turkey Trot 5K. (Doesn't even look like he's breathing hard, does he?)

Several of our family members took part in this hill-acious event on Friday morning. Dustin and two other people finished before the timekeepers were even ready to record times, but we know it was less than 20 minutes. I think Spencer was around 23 minutes. Quite impressive for a 7th grader. (Spencer, if you'll send me your time I'll correct it here)

My brothers and one sister in law all finished. Period. Pretty impressive for anyone if you ask me.

 C'mon in. The Water's Fine.

Maybe today will be a productive day. After all, I had my POD by 3:00 am.

The dog woke us up in the night and we let her out where she proceeded to chase this guy into the pool. It's proven to be a great method of armadillo catching for us in the past too.

If it hadn't been 3:00, we would have put him into a crate for relocation, but instead we let him go. When we got him out he shook off like a cat, wandered in circles a bit, bumped into the patio table (they have very poor eyesight) and finally ran off.

He'll be back to dig up my flower beds tonight, I'm sure.

For those of you who have only seen these guys dead and upside down on the side of the road here's proof that living armadillos really do exist. Surprisingly they are very good swimmers too.

I KNOW I KNOW I KNOW --

I promised no more Kildeer photos, but Charity and Charlie would like for you to meet Chiclet.

Charity has been the lesser-celebrated of two Kildeer mothers that I've been watching for the last two weeks. We grieved together when she lost one of her two eggs, but she surprised me on Saturday morning with a very freshly-hatched baby.

I arrived at the nest around 8:00 am, a little later than I usually go out, but if I'd gone any earlier, I probably would have missed the whole thing. Chiclet was fresh, tiny and still soaking wet.

Just the day before, an ornithologist told me that these guys leave the nest as soon as they dry out, and could be gone in about an hour or so.

I stayed for three hours and not much happened, but I couldn't keep myself from coming back. In this photo, taken about 1:00 pm, Chiclet is about 5 hours old. He would walk around, take about five or six steps, fall down, and get up again, just like a people baby learning how to walk. TOO TOO CUTE but always going AWAY from the camera.

Both parents were very involved in his care, and even Grace and her mate popped in for a visit and to help babysit the first real nest outing.

By 6:00 pm, when I came back for my third visit of the day, the parents were still around and acting very protective, but I couldn't find the baby. There's a creek (fancy word for drainage ditch) and grassy area nearby, and they provided a much friendlier and safer environment for raising the baby than this caliche parking lot.

More photos from the day will go into the Kildeer gallery soon, but I have some other projects I have to finish today. It's true what they say about new babies. Once they're born, you just can't get anything else done.

Meanwhile, Grace waits. Based upon the date her fourth egg was laid, if my sources are correct, we won't see her babies before July 15.
